Decorating a Split Level Foyer

by | Jul 13, 2015 | Home | 0 comments

Today I wanted to answer a Youtube viewer’s question…

Brenda Collier writes, “I live in a split level foyer home. Any decorating or staging tips for this kind of home?”

Of course, I do, Brenda and thanks for your question, for all you viewers out there if you have decorating or staging question be sure to send them to me at help@toritoth.com or you can always leave a comment on our youtube channel or facebook page those links are below. But back to the question…
Brenda this a problem for a lot of homeowners who have a split level foyer, especially if there older because quite frankly there isn’t enough room to do much with them. But as you know this is an important space whether selling or staying because its the first place you walk into the home…but already your faced with a decision do you go up or down as you try to navigate past the cluttered floors and furniture corners.
So, here are three different ways you can make this space functional without losing valuable square footage.
The first option is to use some type of wall unit system like this one from Pottery Barn that you can mix the function based on your needs or you can create your own. You can do this by adding a narrow shelf, some hooks and some artwork and then you have a makeshift entry way where you can grab something beforee running out the door
The second is to create a built-in shelving system like this one pictured. Now you need space to do this, but you can either build the shelves on top of the wall or inset them into the wall to avoid losing square footage they almost look like cubbie holes you can store jackets, backpacks or shoes.
The third is to use a small depth piece of furniture and a mirror or artwork and place that on the landing if you have enough room to navigate past the furniture or you can place the furniture on top of the stairs in the main level of your home, like shown in this picture. Just make sure you can see the furniture from the landing and it will help invite buyers upstairs rather than down.
Other things to consider is a seating area maybe a bench or chair will fit in the space. Also, make sure this entire hallway that extends the from the second floor to the landing to the first floor and beyond is all the same neutral color.
Do you have a tip for decorating a split level home, please share that below. Happy styling.
