Inspired by the Tropics | Use Tropical Flowers to Spruce Up the Summer Season

Happy Summer! The summer solstice happens today officially kicking off the season that reminds us of sunny days, beautiful beaches and relaxing by the pool. While we can’t always getaway to beautiful island along the Pacific, we can always easily bring the beauty of the tropics into our homes with gorgeous tropical flowers and plants.

Earlier this month we took a trip to the New York Botanical Gardens, as part of my birthday celebration, to discover their new exhibit Georgia O’Keeffe: Visions of Hawai’i. She was a pioneering American modernist who created innovative depiction of her surroundings. The artist’s subject was flowers and plants.

This landmark exhibition offers a rare focus on 20 of O’Keeffe’s depictions of Hawai‘i from a nine-week sojourn in 1939 while on commission to produce images for a Hawaiian Pineapple Company promotional campaign.

Elsewhere in the garden visitors can study and document the plants of Hawai‘i; contemporary sculpture inspired by its flowers and fruit; and an illustrated travelogue of O’Keeffe’s island-hopping journey. Here is a quick video of one of the displays:

Here are more images as we toured the gardens. These exotic beauties help breathe life into any space with their bright colors and refreshing look.

Living in New York City, we don’t get to see these flowers all year long flourish. So, in order to make this trip last beyond the gardens of NYBG, I wanted to look for other ways to use a tropical theme in my home this summer.

ProFlowers created a beautiful guide to caring for and styling some of the most popular  tropical flowers for your home. Their styling tips include ideas for styling greenery, flowers, place settings and desserts with a modern and classy tropical theme. Take a look at their guide to see how you can turn your home into a sophisticated tropical paradise!

We decided to plant hibiscus plants, elephant ears, croton plants, passion fruit and more in flower pots around our patio and pool. How will you embrace this tropical theme in your home? Let me know below.
