We all live in a big world with big ideas and want big spaces to fill with lots of stuff. But, most homes have at least one small room to contend with…so how do you maximize space and make it work for you and your family?
You accept the fact that you have a small space! By acknowledging your room’s true dimension a homeowner can make wiser choices when it comes to the function, furnishings and living in the space. Here are 15 ways to maximize space in your small room:
Small Room Solution # 1: Window Illusion
Start by enhancing what’s already in the room the windows. Install curtain rods near the ceiling instead of right above the window frame. This will draw the eye upward and not only make the windows, but the entire room seem taller. Need to increase the width of your windows? Hang the rod a few inches past the sides of the panes so the window covers the wall and not the glass.
Small Room Solution # 2: Corner Space
The corner of a room is often-overlooked, so rather than leave it empty squeeze in an extra accent chair or a corner bookshelf, making your room more livable. You could even turn into a cozy reading nook, command center or play area.
Small Room Solution # 3: Scaled-Down Furniture
Small Room Solution # 4: Peek-A-Boo Furniture
Instead of using a solid-wood furniture, especially a coffee table which can weigh down a space, choose a see-through acrylic or glass one or a table with an open metal base.
Small Room Solution # 5: Dual-Purpose Furniture

Small Room Solution # 13: Add Metallics
Like with the mirrors, if you add metallics in a room on your fixtures and in your accessories the pieces will bounce light around the room making the space appear bigger than it actually is.
Small Room Solution # 14: Vertical Height
Enhance your space by using vertical height. Hang as much as you can on the wall (don’t make it look cluttered though) or try building a loft in extremely tall rooms to add an extra seating or storage area to hang out in.
