Choosing Paint for All Types of Materials

Have an item in your home that’s starting to look ratty, old and worn? Try painting it! The evolution of paint has changed so dramatically you can paint just about anything to update the item. For only a few dollars, paint can transform nearly anything into something dazzling and new. Many manufacturers make specialty paints for specific applications; discover these five different materials that you can paint: metal, plastic, wood, glass and upholstery.  Paint Metal (Including Steel, Aluminum & Iron) Prep: First off, remove any rust and flaking with a wire brush. Sand with 220-grit sandpaper. Rinse with plain water, then let dry. Painting Tip: Use an exterior-grade primer and paint that are formulated for metal. Acrylic latex paint is usually the best. Avoid cheap metal paint or a spray paint which is likely to rub off. Paint Plastic Prep: You want to sand lightly with 320-grit sandpaper so the paint sticks […]

How to Use a Home Decor Theme In a Room

Not sure how to use a home decor theme in a room? No worries, it’s easy to use a theme to add personality into a space…the hardest part is deciding what theme to show off.  Homeowners have so many themes to choose from. Whether you take a cue from a location, design style, season, or even a beloved kid’s character there are five tips you should follow when working a theme into your home decor. Who can blame you the sense of smell is the strongest of all the senses, especially when selling a home. The scents and odors in a home can connect or disconnect buyers or even guests to a house with just one sniff. There is a reason why a home owner isn’t aware of the woozy urine smell or last night’s dinner odor haunting the air; they’re immune to the odor. It’s too familiar to their nose. As a home stager, I’ve seen our share of “stinky homes” from pets, food, clothes or shoes, smoking, mold, appliances and air vents. When showcasing a home we recommend clients get rid of the sources of bad odor, rather than simply mask the smell with a scent. But, what if your listing stinks? […]

Staging a Vacant Home in NYC

Our New York City based home staging company, Stylish Stagers, Inc. recently had the opportunity staging a vacant home in Tudor City Historic District. This distinguished, 10-story, cooperative apartment building was built in 1927 just steps away from the United Nations. When staging a vacant home, you want to setup a layout that appeals to the highest number of potential buyers.  The home will be staged with furniture, decorations, paintings, and other home décor to complete the look. One of the most important benefits to staging a home is the ability to allow a buyer to envision themselves in the home. By creating a warm, welcoming feel you’ll help make a potential buyer feel more comfortable in an empty home. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this before and after photo, which one would you prefer? Which one creates an emotional connection? A room before staging, looks dark, small and uninviting. […]
