Benjamin Moore Announces 2017 Color of the Year

After a year of white ruling the design world, Benjamin Moore is plunging deep into it’s color palette. The company recently announced it’s 2017 color of the year, along with 22 colors you can pair with this bold hue. While the 2016 color was Simply White OC-117, Benjamin Moore went with a color they describe as a rich, deep amethyst: Shadow 2117-30. It’s a saturated purple that works well with other jewel tones like ruby and emerald. “Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It is a color that calls to mind a ‘past,’ yet it can also make a contemporary, color-confident statement,” Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore’s creative director, said in the announcement.  Shadow is part of a bolder “Color Trends” palette that Benjamin Moore says reflects consumers’ newfound level of confidence in using deeper, saturated colors. Need inspiration? From pale and muted to saturated and deep this color works with everything.   How did they […]

Home Decorating Trend: Matte Black & Copper

Both black and copper have crossed paths in home decorating trends in past decades, but many designers are juxtaposing matte finishes with shiny metals to create an eye-catching opposition. Matte finishes are being used on walls, furniture, fixtures, and ceramics all over the house. A matte finish is being combined with metallics to create a striking contrast of sheens. The new matte finishes are represented in moody dark hues and pretty pastels (talk about varying contrasts). Matte black is especially raising eyebrows in the kitchen, where in recent years we opted for all white surfaces, stainless steel appliances and fixtures.  Matte black adds a contemporary contrast, while copper warms the dark hue up, playing well off each other. Here are a few ways to incorporate the hues:   Matte Black & Copper by tori-toth-arena    It’s important to note while this color combo could promote elegance and sophistication, it should be used sparingly. A woman recently calls to discuss staging her home, but more importantly getting rid of her clutter. She has lived in her home for over 50 years; raised two kids there and is now ready to downsize and move in with her son. Over the phone, she mentioned removing items she no longer needed. The woman sounded excited to get started however, upon arrival of the home staging consultation she didn’t seem interested in cooperating.  When I asked what was she willing to pack and get rid of she replied, “nothing.” Then continued to say, “her kids or possibly future buyers might be interested in her worn-out belongings” (which we know probably isn’t the case). She understands there are small items, like photos, that need to be packed, but the woman can’t phantom the idea of removing or rearranging furniture in her home. In her mind she believes the decades […]
